Local people in Toraja are generally friendly and helpful, and mostly are strong believers of Christianity. Even though it is a Christian predominated region, travellers are advised to dress appropriately in order to avoid unnecessary attention. If you encounter the locals tend to laugh or smile a lot during talking to you, don't take it wrongly as if something is funny or wrong with you, it is just part of their smiling culture.

Safety

Unlike in big cities in Indonesia, such as Bandung, Manado or Balikpapan, Rantepao is a small busy town in Tana Toraja. Common crimes in big cities, like pickpocketing, are fortunately a rare problem. However, as a common advice, visitors still have to pay attention to their belongings.

Even though foreigners are a comly seen in Tana Toraja, Rantepao normally becomes quiet after 10pm. Shops and restaurants tend to close at this time.

Police in Indonesia (and in Tana Toraja) in general are changing towards better public service standards. Though changing the old habits (and public perception) is not easy and takes time, steps have been taken to improve public perception.
