Christianity started growing in Bangka Island in 1931 and this church of St. Joseph Cathedral is connected with the history. In 1935, Johannes Boen Thiem Kiat, a person from Bangka Island, was the first Pasteur ordained in Pangkalpinang, it was also the first of Indonesia.

The Indonesian government made St. Joseph Cathedral as one of the cultural heritages, alongside with GBIP Maranatha and Jamik Mosque on 8 January 2010.
