Using a rental car during a vacation in Batam is a great choice, since public transportation or metro trans and public buses in Batam don’t cover all areas in Batam, also for the practicality reasons for foreigners. Renting a car with a driver is highly recommended, especially for those who are not familiar with the Indonesian driving culture or for those who are first time visitors in Batam. Each car rental company has a different standard of service package. A one-day rental, mostly around 12 hours a day, but for some companies, they only allow you to use the car for 8 hours in a day. Also good to realise that it is better to pay in rupiah (change your foreign currency at an offical money changer) since driver's exchange rate may not be as good as official money changers' rate, besides it is illegal paying in foreign currency in Indonesia (if we don't do illegal things back home, so let's not do different standards, show them that we always respect rules :)
Batam itself is not big, so it will give you more time to explore many interesting places faster. According to some travel agencies and rental car companies, in one day you will be able to explore all interesting places in Batam downtown and Barelang Bridge. However, it also depends on how long you spend time in every place.
