Water Festival
This is a three day festival held annually around October or November, depending on their lunar calendar. In 2011 the festival will be held from 9 to 11 November. But due to the worst flood that did happen in Phnom Penh and the other cities of Cambodia in this wet season, this annual festival is being cancelled and will be held again in 2012.
This festival was revived in 1993 and was known as the water festival after the capital city of the Khmer Kingdom was moved from the Siem Reap region to Phnom Penh.
During the Angkorian era, many centuries ago, the water festival was celebrated near Siem Reap city, but today it is focused on Tonle Sap River, just in front of the Royal Palace in Phnom Penh’s Riverfront area.
In the ancient days this festival was held to celebrate the Khmer kingdom’s supremacy on its water territory, as seen in the picture above. It was also reported that there were many firecrackers and fireworks during the celebration. Today’s water festival consists of boat racing, illuminated boat show and so on.
