6-3-1 Exhibition

The 6:3:1 exhibition will be open for public from 21-25 April 2013 at the VCUQatar Gallery. The "6-3-1" means it is an exhibition of six invited alumni, from three major design disciplines at VCUQatar and VCUarts, in one unique free-open invitation exhibition. It says, "The result is an exhibition that celebrates the creative process and the achievements of each individual designer. But it also highlights their shared connection to VCU, their drive to succeed, and their exciting professional journeys. This is what unites 6:3:1 as an exhibition and what, it is hoped, will inspire future design graduates of VCU." Come and see them at their gallery. Global Art Forum_7

This year's GAF will have artists, curators, musicians, strategists, thinkers, and writers gathered for two days of live talks and performances in Doha on 16 and 17 March 2013, 3pm to 6pm. Tasmeem Doha 2013

In Conversation: Artist Interventions in the Museum

This is an interesting conversation between artist Said Baalbaki, Balint Havas and Andras Galik from Poland and the Museum's Acting Director Michelle Dezember, who will talk about how artists utilize museums as their creative site. Doha Trade Fair 2012

Doha Trade Fair 2012 is the biggest annual shopping carnival in Doha which will be held for almost 2 weeks long, starting from 1 July till 11 July 2012 at the Doha Exhibition Center. The 2nd Annual Underground Infrastructure and Deep Foundations Qatar

"ranslation In and Of the World"

Translation and Interpreting Institute in collaboration with Bloomsbury Qatar Foundation and the British Council will hold the third annual international translation conference: ?Translation In and Of the World? on 29 April to 1 May 2012 in Education City. VCUQQatar: Fashion Show 2012

VCUQatar will hold an annual fashion show this year on 19 April 2012 at VCUQatar Atrium, Education City, Doha and it is under the patronage of Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, Chairperson of Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development. VCUQatar?s Annual Fashion Show is both a formative and culminating element of the Fashion Design program, launching students from student life into successful careers. Retail Without Walls: Kiosk Culture

"Retail Without Walls: Kiosk Culture" is a research project by VCUQatar Assistant Professors, Liam Colquhoun and Matthew Holmes-Dallimore about the core considerations of retail design, such as identity and functionality in different culture. They did research trips to Dubai, Boston, Marrakech, Mumbai and Istanbul to look closely at how these structures varied and shared some common characteristics. The project lasted for 18 months and it will be presented at Mathaf (Arab Museum of Modern Art -see the location map) on 1-11 April 2012, while the opening reception itself will be held on 1 April 2012 at 7:30 pm. Hope Floats - Raft Race 2012

International Doha Beach in collaboration with iloveqatar.net will host their first annual raft race at Intercontinental Doha Beach, on 30 March 2012, at 8am. Hope Floats ? Raft Race 2012 will show many creative uses for previously discarded materials and products. The members of each team cannot be more than 6 persons. DIMDEX 2012

As a part of the Crossing Boundaries Lecture Series by VCU Qatar, Juhani Pallasmaa, a Finnish architect, will give an open lecture entitled 'Space, Place and Atmosphere' on 21 March 2012 at 6pm. VCUQatar's Crossing Boundaries Lecture Series reflects the cross-disciplinary nature of the featured speakers who are representatives of excellence in design thinking. Located at VCUQatar Atrium, Education City, Doha, it will discuss the concept of peripheral perception and emotion in architecture. This lecture is open to the public and no reservation is required.

Intercem 2012, Doha

This is a business conference to look at the cement and construction markets of Qatar and the other major regional economies, including special reviews of Saudi Arabia and the UAE, as well as country reviews of Egypt, Pakistan, Iran and North Africa. The Beaded Prayers Project

This is an international collaborative project to celebrate diversity and unity through a participatory art form, "the beaded prayer" or "the amulet prayer". Directed by Sonya Clark, a manufactured artist and Chair of Craft/Material Studies at VCU Richmond, Virginia, this event consists of a workshop, a lecture and an exhibition, which will begin from 12 March 2012. The workshop will be held on 12 March 2012, starts from 12:15 pm till 2:15pm at VCUQatar Gallery. The lecture itself on 13 March 2012, at 6pm, located at VCUQatar Atrium, while the exhibition will be held until 19 March 2012 at the same location. Exhibition: Shared Glass: a Design Collaboration between VCUQatar & Fabrica

An exhibition of work featuring a collaboration between VCUQatar?s MFA Design Studies students and students from Fabrica in a glass-blowing workshop to create a collection of "hybrid" objects: pieces that mixed and matched Middle Eastern and Western influences, shapes, and functions. Cool Runnings

This is a water race competition that organized by KIA motors and Stenden University and followed by teams from various organizations in Qatar. Each team will have to design and build their own vehicle to skim the water as fast as they can. This competition will be held at The Pearl, Doha on 16 December 2011 at 1pm. The Children of Gaza

VCUQatar's gallery presents an art and photography exhibition for the benefit of the Save the Children Fund. The exhibition will be held from 9 November to 3 December 2011. Refresh Qatar is a bi-annual informal conference involving web designers, developer, e-marketers, and so on that is held at the Virginia Commonwealth University in Qatar. Sonia Ashour: "Cultural Identity: breaking the boundaries of cliches"

This open lecture to the public brought by VCU Qatar will be held on 21 September 2011 at 6pm. The lecture also involves a few other speakers that will focus on "the cross-disciplinary nature" that are also "representatives of excellence in design thinking". Sonia Ashour herself obtained her Master of Fine Arts degree in International Hospitality Design from Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, Virginia and has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Interior Architecture from King Faisal University, Dammam, Saudi Arabia.
