Reaching Manado by Sea

Within Manado | Outskirts of Manado
There are two main seaports or "pelabuhan" ( /pé-lâ-boo-ân/ ) in North Sulawesi, which are Pelabuhan Manado and Pelabuhan Bitung. Note: expect to pay additional Rp. 500 to Rp. 1,000 due to the fuel price hike in 2013 - apply to all means of transportation on this page.

Pelabuhan Manado is mainly for ships or boats going to other smaller islands within North Sulawesi Province and Bunaken Island. It is located in the vicinity of Calaca/Pasar 45 traditional market. If you want to go to Bunaken on regular ships, a one-way ticket costs you Rp. 12,000* per person and there is a small fee (entrance fee) to enter the seaport of Rp. 1,000 per person. Its departure schedule is 2pm from Monday to Saturday, though it might be delayed up to approximately one hour because of high tides or other reasons. Since this is a regular ship between Manado and Bunaken, you will also find many types of cargo, such as gasoline, cooking oils, building materials, sacks of rice and flour, groceries, and so forth. Click the picture above for more and bigger photos of the boat trip to Bunaken Island from Manado Port.
The ship will drop you and the rest of the passengers at Pangalisang Beach, which is about 5 to 7 kilometers (3 to 4 miles) away from the touristic beach, Liang Beach.
If you do not want to wait and do not mind spending extra money either, then you can go to Pasar Bersehati/Calaca, just next to Pelabuhan Manado, for private boats. A speedboat to Bunaken costs approximately Rp. 400,000*. You will reach the island in about 30 minutes. There are also bigger private boats for rent at a cost of around Rp. 600,000* to 700,000*, which can accommodate up to 15 people.
*Please do take note that there is a very recent increased on petrol prices in Indonesia that will also increase prices mentioned on this page.

Both Pelabuhan Manado and Pasar Bersehati/Calaca are within walking distance from Pasar 45 mikrolet terminal and taxi is also easy to get.
International and interstate ships will dock at Pelabuhan Bitung, about one hour drive from downtown Manado. Should you arrive on a cruise to Bitung, they have a visa on arrival facility. There are a few options on how to reach Bitung or Manado from this seaport. If you arrive on an arranged tour or cruise, you should have everything already arranged, while for other passengers, they can take either taxi, which will already be lined up outside the seaport, or mikrolet. A taxi trip to Manado can cost you around Rp. 200,000*. If you have lots of baggage with you, you have no choice but to negotiate your taxi fare with the driver. Mikrolets are usually also lined up outside the seaport every time a ship arrives. A single trip to Girian terminal will cost you Rp. 2,500*, from where you can continue your trip to Manado.
For interstate ship schedules please go to PELNI's website, the national shipment company: www.pelni.co.id.

Hello Juliana, thank you for your visit. Unfortunately, as of today, the cheapest way, may be, via Bali or Jakarta. Cebu Pacific (low cost carrier) flies to Bali and Jakarta to the Phillipines and Lion Air (another LCC) also flies between Manado and these two cities. |
