Pariaman is located about 60 kilometers to the north of Padang. There is an annual event held here every July, called Tabut or Tabuik. This annual Islamic festival is held to commemorate the heroic battle of Muhammad’s two grandchildren, Hasan and Husein. Symbolic coffins (height 12 meter to 15 meter) and models of Bouraq, a mythical winged horse that has face like a human, who carried the two granchildren into heaven, are marched through the streets in Pariaman along with traditional music and dances. At the end of the festival, they will cast the symbolic coffins and the Bouraq into the sea from Gondoriah Beach.
